CHANTAL BINET - FAQ
A few important distinctions:
Therapy: Therapy manages the healing of suffering, dysfunctions and internal conflicts. Focus is put on resolving problems linked to the individual’s past and that are keeping him from functioning emotionally in the present.
Consulting: A consultant can be called upon for his expertise to work with individuals and organizations. There are many approaches in consulting. Often, the consultant will be asked to render a diagnosis, suggest solutions and help implant the proposed solutions. The presence of a consultant within a process will be short term, punctual or repetitive over a determined period of time whereas, the premise of coaching is that the individual/organization is able to manage his/its own solutions with the support and supervision of the coach, based on the discovery of said resources and solutions.
Mentorat: Mentoring is often mistaken for coaching. The mentor is an expert guide that shares his knowledge and experience in the same area of expertise as the person who is being mentored. The mentor can support an employee in eventually taking over if they work in the same company. In such a case, the mentor often has an agenda for the mentored, in keeping with the expectations of the organization. A coach is external to the organization and has no agenda for the client other than what the client expects of himself. A coach will help the client clarify the content of the sessions and will not intervene in the identification of goals.
Coaching: Coaching focuses on the individual’s personal and professional development and on the changes that must occur from within in order to reach desired goals. The coach does not have to be an expert in the specific area of the person he is coaching since the work can be done through the individual’s strengths, potential and success. The coaching approach will last several months, on a weekly basis or every other week in order to create consistency and momentum in breakthroughs and actions. The coach will urge the client forward by exploratory questions and requests that are aimed towards the future. Thanks to a structured method of conversation, the emphasis is put on action, responsibility and follow-up. The coach’s first priority is to support the client in the creation of his own strategies aimed at reaching precise personal and professional goals. The client must not be looking for emotional healing.
How long does a coaching process last?
Each process is unique because the needs and particularities of each individual and organization are different. You can expect a coaching process to take at least 4 to 6 months in order to obtain durable and repeatable results. It is not rare for a coaching process to go on for a year or more because since change is constant, human nature evolves and challenges are more and more numerous on the job market, individuals and organizations see the coaching process as an effective tool that responds to their desire to solidify their bases and to be proactive when facing the future.
How much does a coaching process cost?
This depends on:
- The coach’s academic and professional training and experience;
- The coach’s certifications from a school that is accredited and recognized by the International Coach Federation (ICF) and the coach’s membership to the ICF;
- The coach’s area of expertise and the nature of his clientele (life coaching, business coaching, executive coaching, etc.);
- The length and nature of the coaching process (individual or team coaching, via telephone or on site – weekly, every other week, monthly).
Rates are always offered on a monthly basis and can go from $300/month to $5000/month or more depending on what is expected.
